Pepita Cameron passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014, at the Nazareth House in Fresno, CA, her home for the past three years. At the Nazareth House, Pepita showed us how to live a life of prayer and love for your neighbor, in spite of being ill.
Pepita was born Ida Josefina Macias Nowak on April 12, 1928, at Guayaquil, Ecuador, South America. Her father passed away a few months before she was born, so she was raised by her mother in the house of her beloved grandparents. Her grandmother was Graciela, and her grandfather was Josif Nowak, after whom she was named.
Pepita came to the United States in the 1950's, with her uncle, Dr. Wenceslao Nowak, and lived briefly in San Diego, CA and then San Francisco, CA. In San Francisco she met her future husband, Evan Cameron, whom she married in 1957. Evan and Pepita raised a family in Fresno. In 1975, Pepita became a United States Citizen, with her new official name, Josephine Cameron. Pepita was very active in clubs and social and religious groups, but mostly she dedicated her time to her family and to many ministries at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Pepita was deeply religious and had many long lasting wonderful friendships among the parishioners of OLV.
Pepita was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro Macias Peña and Ida Graciela Nowak Bodero; and by her husband, Evan Dhu Cameron.
She is survived by her daughter, Lori Cameron and her husband, Dr. Emilio Garcia; her son, Maurice Cameron and his wife Cindy; four grandchildren, Emily, Alexander, Evan and Grace; half-sisters, Lucia Mancero of Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Virginia Visciglio of Cerritos, CA; sister-in- law, Vera (Cameron) LeBreton of San Francisco; and many cousins, niece and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Nazareth House on Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Saint Peter's Cemetery.
Arrangements under the direction of Whitehurst Sullivan Burns & Blair Funeral Home, Fresno, CA.
