That is where his parents Ralph and Annie Carlos raised him along with his two younger sisters Sylvia and Nancy. Johnny was the oldest of many grandchildren and had a special bond with his grandparents. He was a rambunctious child, and often amused people with the stories of his youth.
On April 16th ,1966 John married Jennie Ontiveros. Together, they raised two children, Richard and Lorraine, and many years later had an added surprise and welcomed another daughter Marina. They had a beautiful 34 years together before Jennie preceded him in death in 2000.
On September 7th, 2001, John married Julie Lynn Pethtel, and he happily gained another daughter, Kristen. John and Julie had a wonderful 22 years together sharing in their ministry together, traveling and making many beautiful memories. Julie lovingly cared for John till the very end, and he passed peacefully with her at their home on May 8th, 2024.
John loved his family dearly. Throughout the years he was so happy to add to his family three sons-in-law; Alex Rivera, Edgar Leal and Ben Stodghill, two grand children Tiffany and Cash, as well as two great grandchildren, Gurteg and Jasleen, and was looking forward to meeting a new great granddaughter later this year. Later in life, he was so happy to become acquainted with another sister, Roseann Rodriguez. Through Roseann, he was able to know two more siblings, Larry and George Sanchez. He also welcomed in to the family two brothers-in-law, Johnny Mirelez and Rene Lozano, and a sister-in-law, Laura Whitford, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, all whom he loved dearly.
While in the Navy he became the ships barber and continued as a barber even when returning home. When he stopped doing this professionally, he continued to cut hair for friends and family. He started at PPG Industries in 1968 where he continued working for 32 years, until his retirement in 2000. John had a great sense of humor and loved making people laugh with his stories and jokes. John loved to learn new things and was an avid reader of a variety of topics and genres. With a head full of random facts, you could often find him watching Jeopardy where he would get almost every answer correct.
That love of reading prompted him to accept a book and read it in full that same night. This is how he learned about his God, Jehovah. His faith in God and his promises were some of the most important things in his life. He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on May 29th, 1976. He found great joy in sharing his hopes from the Bible and spent much time out in the ministry, touching the lives of many.
John loved people and made so many dear friends throughout his life. It’s often a joke in the family that we couldn’t go anywhere without running into someone he knew. John’s legacy of love, laughter, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. As a family, we want to say thank you to each and every one of you who have loved and supported John throughout his life and now into his rest.
