Jesse’s family moved to Highway City (Fresno) during the Depression where he grew up farming. He and his siblings were required to play two instruments and master one. He played violin. Everyone had a job to do in the family. His older sister Adrienne (Lee) was in charge of taking care of him. They remained close through the years. He took a special trip to Portland to see her last year. That trip landed him in the hospital for a week once he got there, but it was that important for him to see her.
At the age of 17, he joined the army where he was stationed in Germany during WW2 doing reconnaissance work. During his enlistment he received several commendations including the Bronze Star (The Bronze Star medal is the fourth-highest military combat award for bravery & heroism) and a Purple Heart for wounds received.
Upon returning to Fresno, he met his future wife and mother of his children Virginia Borjas. They met in a movie theater. He asked if he could sit next to her and she said yes. They married in August of 1949 and had three children Kristina, Angelina and Jesse Jr. Though they eventually divorced, they found their way back to being best friends until the day she passed away. Her last call was to him.
Jesse had a tremendous work ethic, showing up early to everything, never wanting to “wait till the last minute”. He was active and always working on a project up into his later years. He loved to make people smile with a joke or famous quote he made up. If you took a picture with him, he was probably giving you bunny ears. If you knew him long enough, you probably got a nickname; whether you knew it or not. He was a funny and compassionate rascal. He didn’t have to say much, but you knew what he meant just by his presence. Jesse had a faith in God that saw him through many of life’s difficulties. Never complaining but accepting Gods’ will for his life, he trusted Jesus for his salvation. He knew that when his day came, he would not be afraid, but would be in the presence of our Lord.
Jesse is survived by his daughters Kristine Buck of Whitman AZ and Angie De Alba of Visalia CA, his sister Adrienne (Lee) Ramirez of Portland OR, 8 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, a great-great grandson and many nieces and nephews whom he held dear. He is predeceased in death by his son Jesse Garcia Jr. and siblings Leo Garcia, Francis Ruiz, Carmen Torres, Connie Chavez, Maria, and Teresa.
He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known him.
