Gene was a graduate of Wheaton College, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and University of Southern California where he earned a doctorate in Social Ethics. Gene was an American Baptist minister, Served Several Churches and taught at Eastern (now Palmer) Seminary before arriving to serve Fresno First Baptist from 1982-93 as Pastor and later as Pastor Emeritus. Both Gene and Jeannette remained active members.
Gene taught an Adult Bible class at the church and served on the Board of Directors for Palmer Theological Seminary. He was instrumental in the Laotian ministry at Fresno First Baptist. His love and commitment for the Body of Christ at work in the world was his passion throughout his life.
Jeannette helped establish New Directions, a bereavement support group at First Baptist and had served as a hospice volunteer while living in Pennsylvania. Although Jeannette worked outside of the home for many years she felt her calling to be a Pastor's wife and mother were her greatest joys.
Gene and Jeannette were beloved in the local church and American Baptist Churches USA. They touched the lives of many throughout the years of their ministry. They both loved to travel, spend time with family and friends and were avid readers. They vacationed annually at Lake Shehawken where they will be buried at a later date.
They leave behind two sons, Jay of Anaheim and John of Fresno; and a daughter, Nancy S. McHugh of Vermont. They also leave behind four grandchildren and many dear family and friends.
