The youngest of 5 children, “Jennie” was a spirited child, a quality that she carried throughout her life and no doubt contributed to her endurance. She excelled at sports and lettered in basketball and softball in high school, graduating in 1939. Right after high school, at 18 years old, her love of softball led her to sunny California where she joined a semi-professional traveling softball team. It was during these games that she met the love of her life, a handsome bat boy for the Pacific Coast Angels, later to become the Los Angeles Angels. He swept her off her cleats and the two were wed.
She married Robert Simpson on January 25, 1942, right before he left for Europe during WWII. He returned after the war and they started their little family, settling down in Southern California. Jennie continued her love of sports, cheering on her beloved Los Angeles Angels, something that never waned, even up to weeks before she passed. She also had a love of the outdoors and of horses. She and Bob raised thoroughbred horses on their Hope Springs Farm. She continued to care for these horses well into her 90s, mucking the horse stalls, cleaning the barn, and hiking up the hill on her property to feed them twice a day.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her sweetheart, Robert, who passed just months after their 50th wedding anniversary. She is also preceded in death by her son, Gregory Simpson.
She is survived by her daughters, Vikki Iness and Sharon Rogers (and son-in-law Raymond Rogers) all of Clovis, Ca, as well as by her 4 grandchildren Josh Rogers, Jamie Leach, Lisa Lawson and Heath Simpson, and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was a spirited woman in “a league of her own” and will be dearly missed.
Interment will take place in Chatsworth, CA on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
