April 14, 1932 - May 2, 2024
Fred Preston Jones Jr., born in California, 92, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Madeleine. He is survived by his daughters Candyce (Rob), Cindy (Brian), Caran (Dan), K.C., daughter-in-law Patty (married to son Michael whom preceded Fred in death) and two step-daughters Debra (Tom) and Michelle.
He was a beloved grandfather to Paul, Kristina, Summer, Craig, Cody (deceased), Cortney, Danielle, Marc, Vincent, and Cameron; in addition, he had 15 great grandchildren. He was a brother to Virginia and Vickie, and uncle to several nieces and nephews. Fred was adored by many close friends, as he was a long-time resident of The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens.
Fred grew up in San Gabriel, CA. During high school he was involved in many sports, his favorite was gymnastics. He also enjoyed being part of the music program. He loved the piano and taught himself to play. He loved our country; he served in the United States Navy Reserves. He became a steel detailer and worked for US Steel-TRUSCO Tank and owned businesses, WESCO and Springer-Jones, Inc.
Fred moved his family, his parents, and his little sister, to the mountains in 1967. Being gifted in woodworking, he redesigned/built the Alder Springs Grocery and Coffee Shop with his father and son. Together they perfected the infamous “Jones Fit”. “The Store” was his pride and joy and the ‘coming home’ spot for Christmas for the entire family. Fred’s favorite pastime was playing snooker. Fred worked hard to keep up “The Store” for his family to gather and create memories. Though we lost this family heirloom in the Creek Fire, the countless memories comfort us.
Much like the song, “Born Free”, he followed his heart in enjoying flying his own plane, golfing with family and friends, traveling, water skiing, and snow skiing. He had a vegetable garden in the mountains for several years and was always working on a project or two. He was a thinker and a problem solver – characteristics that are now carried on in his children and their children.
He encouraged all of us to be strong, loving, and giving. He loved the Lord – he raised his children in a Christian home, taught bible study classes, and was a church leader for the First Baptist Church.
We were truly blessed to have such a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. Dad, we miss you and you will be forever in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to donate to a non-profit of your choice.
A Graveside Service for Fred will be held Monday, May 13, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Belmont Memorial Park, 201 N Teilman Ave, Fresno, CA 93706.
