Doris was born in Fresno to Bob and Nita Hanning after they came from Texas looking for better opportunities. She married Edward Smith in 1955. In 1980, she graduated from the Fresno City College Nursing Program and then worked for over 20 years as a RN at the Fresno Community Hospital cardiac unit. After retirement, she volunteered at the Central California Blood Center, having donated herself every 8 weeks for 24 years- almost 20 gallons of blood.
Doris had a passion for camping, and hiking to the tops of mountains. She also loved to crochet and to do needlepoint for her home and as gifts for others.
She passed on peacefully the day after being with her family at a large holiday dinner. That was her great joy.
She is survived by her husband Edward Smith; her sons Don Smith and his wife Susan, Curtis Smith and his wife Connie, and Dale Smith and his wife Marie; her grandchildren Daniel Smith and his wife Rebecca, Rebecca Day and her husband Jeff, Christine Borba, and Allen Smith; her great-grandchildren Dante Swift, Desiree Swift, Ember Smith, Rowan Smith, Harrison Borba, and Liam Day.
Remembrances should be sent to the Central California Blood Center, 4343 W. Herndon Ave, Fresno, CA 93722.
A Celebration of Life for Doris will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel, 202 N. Teilman Ave., Fresno, California 93706.
