Doris was born on January 13, 1930 at St. Clare Hospital in Monroe, Wisconsin. She died on April 30, 2019 at her home in Fresno, California.
Doris was the daughter of Sanford and Leona (Arn) Nybroten. She and her sister, Shirley Erickson grew up on the family dairy farm outside of Argyle, Wisconsin. Doris spent her school years in Argyle, graduating high school in 1948.
Doris married Ross Paulson on June 9, 1951. Ross was in the United States Navy, so she travelled to California by herself, while pregnant to be with him. She gave birth to their first child, Jeff Ross on June 9, 1952. Their second child, Dan Joel arrived on December 4, 1959. Doris and Ross divorced in 1966. Ross remarried in 1968 and took the boys with him to the state of Washington.
Doris married Steve Barnes in 1969. At this time they lived in southern California, later moving to Fresno, then back to southern California, finally settling permanently in Fresno. It was during this time that she put Steve through Chiropractor College. Doris and Steve divorced in 1978.
Doris worked at Security First National Bank, which later became Security Pacific Bank, which was bought out by Bank of America. She retired from Security Pacific in 1988. Doris came to Wisconsin after that to help her sister run the Riverside Bar in Argyle for about three to four months. Doris returned to Fresno and went to work for Golden One Credit Union. After retirement from Golden One, she started babysitting for Conner, Helani, and Nathan. This was a very special time in her life as taking care of those kids gave her such joy.
Doris met the love of her life, PJ (Porfie) Garcia in 1988. They have been together ever since. PJ has stood by her side, providing her with compassionate care as the ravages of dementia took her away from us. We often told her she would never find a better man than PJ. What a blessing he has been in her life!
Our Mom was a shopper and boy was she a shopper. The shopping trip wasn’t successful unless you came home with something. She loved buying dolls and knickknacks on her various trips around the United States seeing family and friends. Doris preferred to travel by car so she could see the countryside. Her good friend Gladys Gleason or PJ would accompany her on these trips. She also made annual trips to visit her sons in Washington and her family and friends in Wisconsin. As PJ says, she always knew her way around or how to get there, even in other cities where she had not travelled before. Our Mom enjoyed people, loved to visit and laugh. She made a lot of friends wherever she went. Our Mom taught us to be kind, considerate and show compassion and gave us strength. We thank her for that.
Doris is survived by her life partner and love, PJ Garcia; her sons: Jeff (Debbie) Paulson of Colville, WA and Dan Paulson of Seattle, WA; grandsons, Andy (Amber) Paulson of Sparks, NV, and Nick Paulson of Reno NV; great-grandsons: Jayden and Zachery also of Sparks, NV. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Erickson of Blanchardville, WI; nieces: Shelly (Dan) Hicks of Argyle, WI and Lori (Myles) Wahl of Blanchardville, WI; nephews: Shawn (Jennifer) Erickson and Darin (Stephanie) Erickson all of Blanchardville, WI and their children.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents: Sanford and Leona Nybroten, her brother Donald and sister, Sharon (both in infancy), granddaughter, Kelly Paulson and previous husbands, Ross Paulson and Steve Barnes.
