Alex Barrera

Alex was raised in Fresno with his two sisters Janie and Rosie. As a child two of his best friends were Walter Hood and David Borrego. His interests at that time were shooting his BB guns with his friends and building forts. His one employee, Juan Paredes was a good worker and later became a good friend. Mike Argain was a business associate for over 40 years and also became a good friend. Alex graduated from Central Union High School in 1966. His favorite subject being history. He also assisted the coach as a batboy and football manager.

Alex married Carmen Gonzales in August 1969 at home in Fresno. This relationship produced two children, daughter Christine and son Peter. He also had one grandson, Alexander.

One of Alex's true passions was music, his love being so great that he could tell you the month and year a song came out as well as the name of the artist. He could at times tell you the name of a song on the sound of the first beat or note. Some of Alex's favorites were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and good mexican music.

Alex also enjoyed BBQs at family gatherings and at Christmas time you could always see him outside cooking carnitas for the Christmas lunch.

Alex enjoyed planting vegetables every year and sharing with family and friends. In the winter he always was very proud of his oranges and shared these as well.

He was self-employed and quite renowned as a furniture refinisher for over 43 years, being known as Pete's Furniture Refinishing.

He is survived by his mother, Elisa Hernandez and her husband Jose Gonzalez; daughter, Christine Jones and her husband, Gerald; grandson, Alexander Jones; his two sisters, Rosie Barrera and Janie Gaitan; nephews, David Cobarrubias and his wife Janelle, and Tony Gaitan; niece Monica Lugo and her husband Randy; great nephews David, Joseph and Daniel Cobarrubias and Zachary Lugo; great niece Angelina Lugo; aunts Esther Torres and Josefina Esquirdo and uncle Salvador Esquirdo.

Alex finally succumbed to cancer and heart disease after a brave battle, passing away on April 23, 2013 at the age of 65 years and 10 days.

Alex's memorial service took place at Tinkler Funeral Chapel & Crematory on April, 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
