Sister Mary Justina Payne, RSM returned to God, Saturday, December 17, 2011 after a long illness. Mary Emma Payne (known in religion as Sister Mary Justina Payne, RSM) was born October 6, 1923 in Newark, OH to Francis and Justine (Vietmeier) Payne. Her elementary education was completed in Newark, OH, and she graduated from Holy Family High School in Columbus, OH. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cincinnati, OH, September 8, 1942 and made her final Profession
in Cincinnati, OH on August 16, 1948. Sister Mary Justina received a B.S. in Education in 1950 from the Athenaeum, Cincinnati, OH, and furthered her educational certification in religious education at University of Dayton.Sister Mary Justina taught children in the primary grades for forty years in the Ohio cities of Cincinnati, London, Piqua, Springfield, Upper Sandusky, Cleveland, and Fremont. She retired at St. Bernardine Home in Fremont, OH in 1985 after a lengthy illness. Sister Mary Justina loved to cook, to read, to entertain children, and thoroughly enjoyed the animals brought to her by her friends. When she was able, she made sure to have a few flowers planted outside her window which she could enjoy. She prayed for her many friends and family
members and followed their lives closely. Sister is survived by two nieces, cousins, many good friends and the Sisters of Mercy. Her nieces are Karen Pratt, Newark, OH and Janice McClain of Shawnee, OK. Her parents and her brother
Kenny preceded her in death. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from 12:45p to 3:45p at St. Bernardine
Home in Fremont, OH. Her funeral Mass will be at 4pm on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at St. Bernardine Home,
Fremont, OH. Burial in Our Lady of the Pines cemetery will be on following day, Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 9:30AM.
