Mr. Heyman was born at Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan on February 28, 1924. He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend, Jeanne L. Heyman, mother, Helen Elizabeth Heyman and his father, Harvey B. Heyman. He was raised by his grandmother, Elizabeth (Jacobs) Heyman, and his grandfather, William Heyman in Bellevue, Ohio.
Mr. Heyman graduated high school in 1942 from Bellevue, Ohio and was a star outfielder for a semi-pro baseball team prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corp at the age of 17. He served with honors in the United States Marine Corp, enlisting in 1943 through 1946. Mr. Heyman was a Corporal First Class in the 1st Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division under the command of renowned Marine Colonel Chesty Puller. He served as a scout in command of his own platoon, whose responsibility was to seek out and destroy enemy gun placements. Mr. Heyman served in the South Pacific Theater in the battles of Peleliu, New Britain, East New Guinea, Okinawa, and Guadalcanal being twice awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Heyman is survived by his sons, James William Heyman (wife, Pat), Richard A. Heyman (wife, Jan), and Michael S. Heyman who lived with and cared for Mr. Heyman after the death of his wife, Jeanne in December 2000. Mr. Heyman has six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Heyman was best known locally as "Mister Democrat" serving as Sandusky County Chairman for more than 22 years. Mr. Heyman was founder of the Sandusky County Democratic Club, and the Sandusky County Young Democrats. He was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award in 1979. He served as the Ohio Democratic Party's State Treasurer in the 1960s and was the Chairman of the 5th District Congressional Committee. Mr. Heyman was the first Ohio Democratic County Chairman to endorse then candidate John Glenn for the United States Senate. He also served as longtime Ohio Deputy Registrar in Sandusky County prior to retiring. While in retirement Mr. Heyman authored and had published a book of his many experiences while serving in the U.S. Marine Corp named "The Fortunes of War" which is sold on Amazon.com.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral & Cremation Service, Fremont, with a vigil at 7:30pm. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 28th at 11:30am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Ken Lill officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with military graveside rights by the VFW and American Legion.
