He was born in Sturgis, Michigan on May 16, 1956.
Charley graduated from the Four County Vocation School, Archibold, Ohio, and had attended Sturgis High School, Sturgis, Michigan and Edon High School, Edon, Ohio.
He formerly worked as a tire changer, truck driver, and was a school bus driver for Fremont Community Schools.
He was a longtime fireman for the Fremont Fire Department and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Charley enjoyed going to rock concerts, playing golf, and helping others. He was also a big sports fan, especially the University of Michigan Football.
Survivors include his mother, Jannita (Gilkison) DeWitt of Angola, Indiana, brother, Carl (Bonnie) DeWitt of Fremont, Indiana, sisters, Sandy (Tim) Gipple of Montgomery, Michigan, Kim (Curt) Fisher of Fremont, Indiana, Sheri (DJ) Strong Hicksville, Ohio, and Nicole (Chris) Lensky of Fort Wayne, Indiana, aunts, Ilene Nusebaum of Sturgis, Michigan, and Patricia Gilkison of Coldwater, Michigan, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Root.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Monday, January 29, 2024 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana. Rev. Jeffrey Teeple will officiate the service.
Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, Fremont, Indiana.
Memorial donations in his memory may be directed to Peace Lutheran Church.
