Milton D Powell

You may remember seeing Milt, "The Captain," walking around Fremont and Union City during the last decade. He walked great distances every day for as long as he could, eventually shortening his route to use his walker, then terrorizing Baldie's parking lot in his wheelchair. Milt was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as a tank commander in Italy and North Africa during World War II. He met and married his wife Odette in Algeria, returning to New England after the war. Milt moved his family to California in the 1950's and worked in the packaging machinery industry for many years. His final position was as bottling hall manager for Distillers Company, LTD in Union City. He volunteered at the Fremont Police Department in retirement, and continued his lifelong love of sailing. Earlier in his life he was a 32nd degree Mason. He is survived by his daughters Sandra and Michelle, son Dean, daughter-in-law Kathieanne, grand-daughters Danielle and Erin and their spouses Steve and Jimmy, great-granddaughter Angelina, great-grandson Liam, and wife Janet. Many generations of family members and friends remember his humor, laughter, stubbornness, and determination. He was a friend, counselor, and occasional brat who knew how to love unconditionally. His greatest wish was to live to meet his great-grandchildren, and then to "go home to see his sweetheart" Odette, who predeceased him in 1990. His success is a comfort to his family.
