Growing up, Luis had a very tough childhood. His father past away when he was only 14yrs old. He was mainly raised by his mother, grandmother and uncle. He had to take responsibility at a very young age and therefore, spent most of his time helping his mother with their small sari-sari store (grocery) and raising farm animals.
Through hard work and perseverance, he was able to earn a college degree in Accounting from the University of the East in 1967. He landed his first job at Air Mac, Philippines. He wanted to advance his education and later passed the boards to become a CPA (Certified Public Accountant).
After graduating he married the love of his life Rosalinda Calara on April 14, 1968 in Navotas, Manila. They had 3 children, Christian Cruz, Christine Cruz and Carmela Cruz.
In 1977, his wife and children migrated to the US and he soon followed one year later. They settled in San Jose, California where they raised their 3 children. He worked at various electronic companies and later became an accountant and controller.
Everyone that knew him knows that he had a great sense of humor. He always made people laugh wherever he went. He loved spending time with family especially his grandchildren. His passions were reading, watching old classics, musical movies, history channels, and old music like Frank Sinatra.
Back in 2013, he received a tragic news that his son Christian was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric cancer. He took care of his son until the very end and dedicated his time with family. Shortly after 3 months, he lost his only son to cancer on November 3, 2013.
In August 2016, he was also diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The doctors told him that he will only have 2 months to live but miraculously, he lived for almost another year. He was able to travel to his favorite places: New York, Washington and Grand Canyon. Throughout his illness, he fought valiantly and was still able to gather all his strength to see his family for the very last time in the Philippines. He really enjoyed his last month of life in the Philippines. Through his faith, he managed to get home to his final resting place. He succumbed to the disease and peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on July 17th, 2017.
His greatest legacy is his family. He survived his wife Rosalinda Cruz, 2 children (Christine Cruz-Wu and Carmela Cruz )and 4 grandchildren (Christian Cruz Jr., Theodore Cruz, Isabela Wu, and Katherina Wu).
