Bob was born on January 6, 1940 in Washington, D.C. to Joseph and Emma Young. He left home at the age of 18 to enlist in the United States Army, where he proudly served for three years before returning home to help care for his ailing father. He always reflected fondly on his Army days and even expressed a desire to re-enlist after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Instead of a career in the Army, Bob served as the chief engineer for a multi-story commercial office building in downtown Washington, D.C. for 35 years. His workday routinely began hours before the traditional “9 to 5” so he could commute to the city and have any maintenance issues in the building resolved well before the workforce arrived. He had a solution to every problem and always was kind and friendly to everyone around him, earning the nickname “the mayor of K Street.”
While his work was important to him, Bob’s greatest passion in life was his love for his wife of 51 years, Sherry. They were happiest when they spent time together, whether it was sharing a cup of coffee in the early mornings, going for a walk on the pier in South Carolina, or just sharing the silence of the day together. Bob was a wonderful husband to Sherry and father to their son, Keith. He was a source of strength during trying times and an unsuspecting comic relief with his dry sense of humor when a laugh was what was needed the most.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sherry Young; his son, Keith Young; and his sister, Margaret Corcoran.
Services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in honor of Robert Young to the American Heart Association.
