Raymond Alfred Ward died peacefully in his sleep on July 2,2023. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Myrtle Irene (Jenkins), his parents, Alfred and Roxie, 3 brothers Paul, James and Edmund, one sister Mary and one grandchild Jake. He is survived by his sons, Raymond Darrell and his wife Brenda, David Lee and his wife Karen and Gregory Joe and his wife Diane. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kimberly, Michael, Amanda Rivera (Carlos) and Heather and many nieces and nephews.
Raymond was born and raised in Huntington, WV and graduated from Huntington East High School before serving his country during the Korean war in the Air Force. Once separated from the military, he and his bride moved back to Huntington where he worked as a television repairman. Shortly thereafter he accepted a position with the Federal Government working as an electrical technician and moved to Sterling, VA where they raised their 3 sons. Ray retired from the Department of Commerce. He and Myrtle then moved to Deland, Fl where Ray drove a school bus for Volusia county and retired again after 10 years of service. It was then that he and his wife moved to Mt. Airy, NC where they truly retired. They participated in many activities and were yearly participant in the NC Senior Games.
There will be a private viewing on July 6th at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home 1621 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Fredericksburg, Va 22401. After cremation the family will transport the remains of both their parents to the White Chapel Memorial Gardens located in Barboursville, WV where military honors will be administered.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
