June Marie Edelstein, 94, of Stafford passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018. She was born on June 26, 1924 in Pike Lake, Minnesota. She grew up in Minnesota and Michigan where she graduated from high school, won the Miss Muskegon beauty pageant, and worked as “Rosie the riveter” assembling aircraft fuselages and wheels during World War II. There she met her husband to-be and eloped to Las Vegas after a single date in 1954 and relocated to southern California.
While living in southern California, she became immersed in being a dedicated wife and mother and went to school for horticulture. Her husband’s work in the aerospace engineering industry took them throughout the country. She lived in Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Washington DC, and eventually retired in Jefferson, North Carolina and then Stafford, Virginia.
During her lifelong travels, she developed a love for dancing, gardening, bowling, skiing, painting, decorative art work and was actively involved with her local church groups. She often reflected on her experiences and people she met while being the proprietor of the Silver Lake Emporium, a small general store in northern New Hampshire. It was from the Emporium she would tell stories of making donuts, selling minnows for ice fishing, tagging dear, bear and describing the “dam cold” and how it was the beautiful place to live and raise a family.
She is survived by her son, Ray, daughter Heidi, and their families who reside in Virginia and Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Edelstein.
