I can’t say how sorry I am for your loss. Jacob was my favorite patient as a resident and loved caring for him and your family during my time at VCU. I still remember how excited he was that I was moving to Indianapolis (after having a rough couple of days in the PICU) and so close to his beloved Colts. We talked a lot of football, movies, and Brooklyn 99 especially how I reminded him of Chelsea Peretti.....I also still have my Marvel must see movies he made me. 
My heart is absolutely broken for you and your family. Jacob was beyond special and has impacted my life forever. 


I can’t imagine the pain you and your family are enduring, I pray the love of your family and friends carry you through this and the memories of your son comforts you.

I will be praying for your family during these times of the loss of your son, I will be praying that you can lean on him. I lost my daughter in October and he is the one that got me through. 

I didn't know Jacob well, but he was a kind, gentle soul. He was a shining star in the McGrath family and had a special place in his grandmother's and sister's eyes. Everyne who knew him will miss him.

To the entire McGrath Family, 
My deepest heart felt sympathies. I have been Jacob's case manager for over a year and only think I spoke with him once in the car on way to an appointment. My interactions with Kevin were remarkable.  I think it was perhaps more than year before I found out how many children were in the family. In my role I am to teach but I learned so much from this family .  

You’re not supposed to have a favorite patient. But I did. It was Jacob. Although being on our unit meant that he would be exhausted, uncomfortable, and down right miserable most days, Jacob always had some sort of sarcastic way of making his situation a little more upbeat. I looked forward to coming in everyday and seeing Jacob and his dad....oh and his giant gaming screen.  He stayed so positive throughout his transplant process and we were all behind him 100% when he finally was discharged and got to go home. We will miss you dearly buddy. You may not have converted me into a sports kind of girl but I will be a Colts fan for life!

I remember meeting Jake when he came into the real estate classroom with his father.  His presence was larger than life, he radiated strength and determination. One could see the love and bond between father  and son, two peas in a pod.  Jake you will be missed by many people, even those that were not in your daily life. May God comfort you, your family and friends.

I met Jacob when he was a sophomore in my English class at RHS. He would always choose the same book, Jake and Lily, during independent reading time. I asked him about it one day, and he said you read it to him when he was younger. I did not know he had cancer until he left my classroom. 

When he first started in the hospital and they reached out to us for assignments to keep him current, I remember the teacher there telling me how happy he was for  the work I sent. Literature unit and an essay topic. Imagine a 10th grader being happy about an essay topic. 

That was your boy. He will be remembered for his sweet and gentle soul, his quiet humor, and his integrity. Along with his strong sense of family. 

May all your memories bring you some small comfort.
