Edward Samuel Cole

Ed was born in 1930 in Baltimore Maryland and later joined the Air Force (Airmen Second Class) from 1948-1952. After returning home he married the love of his life, Hilda Lee Cole, in 1953 and went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland. He worked at Hughes Aircraft post graduation and ultimately joined Western Union to finish off his professional career as the Assistant Vice President in charge of all its computer centers. During his time at Western Union, Ed and Lee were avid motorcyclists riding their twin Harley Davidson motorcycles as often as they could.

In retirement Ed and Lee owned a small trucking company hauling loads up and down the East Coast, and then hauling modular homes around the Fredericksburg area. During this time they got the contractor bug and built several modular homes in Lake of the Woods before deciding to fully retire. Then Ed and Lee spent 10 years traveling around the U.S. with their siamese cat. Once returning home to Fredericksburg, Ed and Lee spent countless hours volunteering at Spotsylvania's American Legion Post 320, ensuring that veterans had adequate transportation to the VA medical center in Richmond, Virginia.

One week before his passing, Ed celebrated his 70th wedding anniversary to his beautiful wife Lee. Together they had three children: Carrie, Jeffrey, and Michael.

Ed was predeceased by his grandson, Shawn Cole, and survived by his wife Hilda Lee Cole, his children Carrie Wood, Jeffrey Cole, and Michael Cole, daughters-in-law Christine Cole, Lisa Cole, and Lana Cole; grandchildren Samantha (Nikki) Wood, Joshua Cole, Heather Cole, Jennifer Cole, and Amanda Cole; and great-grandson Landon.

Services will be held at Laurel Hills Memorial Park (10127 Plank Rd, Spotsylvania VA) on Thursday, July 20th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed’s name to the Spotsylvania’ American Legion Post 320.
