Obituary of Edgar Gene Waggoner Sr.
Edgar Gene Waggoner Sr., age 99, formerly of Rockville, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023. Edgar resided at Harmony at Falls Run in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was born on June 28, 1924, in Jefferson County, Alabama, son of the late Eugene Waggoner and Lois Waggoner (nee Atkins). Edgar served in World War II in the Pacific theater as a medic in the United States Navy from 1943-1946. After WWII, Edgar returned to Alabama and continued his academic studies courtesy of the GI Bill. He originally attended Birmingham Southern College and studied Industrial Chemistry. While at Birmingham Southern College, Edgar played Trumpet in the band. Shortly after his tenure at Birmingham Southern College, he transferred to the school of Pharmacy at what was then called Alabama Polytechnic Institute and is now known as Auburn University. It was also during this time between World War II and the Korean War that Edgar married Mary Gem Nix. From this marriage, two children were born, Edgar Jr. and Cynthia (aka Cindy). Edgar and Mary subsequently divorced. Upon the outbreak of hostilities on the Korean Peninsula in 1950, Edgar answered the call to serve in the Navy again, this time as an Ensign. He was stationed in the Pacific region during this conflict and was a Pharmacist. After the Korean War, Edgar was stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida. While in Florida, Edgar married Jeanne Gravely. While in Pensacola, Edgar and Jeanne had one child who preceded them in death, an infant daughter named Carol. From Pensacola, Florida, Edgar was reassigned to the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. While in Maryland, Edgar and Jeanne had another child, William (aka Will). Edgar resided in Rockville, Maryland and attended The First Baptist Church of Rockville from the late 1950’s until 2018. Edgar resigned his commission and separated from the Navy in 1957. Shortly thereafter, he gained employment at People’s Drug Store at the Kensington, Maryland location. Later he transferred to the People’s Drug store and was the Pharmacist at the Aspen Hill, Maryland Location. He retired from People’s Drug store in 1985. When Edgar retired, he joyfully pursued his interests in running, golfing (with the Rockville Duffers) and music. Edgar loved 40’s swing music, jazz trumpet music, and he sang beautifully. Edgar also served as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Rockville and attended services there until 2018. In 2018, Edgar and Jeanne moved into Riderwood Senior Living facility in Silver Spring, Maryland. In November 2022, Edgar and Jeanne moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia to be closer to their son, Will and his family. His parents Eugene Waggoner and Lois Waggoner (Atkins) preceded Edgar in death. Edgar leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 68 years, Jeanne Marie Waggoner; sons, Edgar (Eddie) G. Waggoner Jr. and William (Will) R. Waggoner (Daphney); daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Wilkerson (James); five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
