Clarice Dean Welborn Edwards, 94, of Stafford, Virginia passed away in the early hours of February 5, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Allen L.D. Edwards, her parents, T.S. and Anna Bell Fisher Welborn, her sisters, Nell Campbell and Virginia Stephenson, her brother, Richard Welborn, and her son-in-law, Alan Baker. She is survived by her two daughters, Gail Baker and Deanna House (Harold), her sister, Rhoda Hendren, five grandchildren: Shawn Baker (Chrissy), Jason House (Julie), Brandy Baker, Daniel House, Dana House Fox (Derek), ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Clarice was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina on April 29, 1924, the third of five children born to Spencer and Anna Bell Welborn. While training to become a teacher in Winston-Salem, she met L.D. Edwards and they were married there in 1943.
Prior to moving to Stafford with L.D. due to declining health in 2008, Clarice had been longtime resident of Portsmouth and member of Alexander Park Baptist Church where she taught first youth and then women’s Sunday School.Clarice retired from the City of Portsmouth Public School System where she taught fifth grade at Alexander Park Elementary and adult education at night at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Throughout her life she was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed romance and spy thriller novels.
The family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to Falls Run Nursing Home and most especially to her nurses, Lovely and Carmen, and her hospice nurse, Ashley.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019, from 10 to 11 am in the Sturtevant Funeral Home Chapel, located at 5201 Portsmouth Blvd, Portsmouth, Virginia, with the funeral service to follow. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery immediately following the service.
