Cathy Soulsby Van Valzah sadly passed away Thursday morning, February 16, 2023, at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia surrounded by her family after a difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. She was a beautiful person who spread joy and happiness wherever she went. Cathy was the type of person you heard before you saw and her laugh was one of a kind.
Cathy was born on December 23, 1956 to the late Edward Joseph Soulsby Sr. & Virginia Inez Soulsby. She was also predeceased in death by two of her brothers, Edward J. Soulsby II & Rodney L. Soulsby. She reluctantly leaves behind her husband of 37 years, Stuart P. Van Valzah; daughters, Virginia L. Powell & Alexandra S. Whitworth, along with their spouses Thomas L. Powell & Jeremy A. Whitworth; brothers Larry Soulsby, David Soulsby and Michael Soulsby; grandchildren Crystal Ferguson, Harper Whitworth, Marshall Whitworth and Sydney Powell; great grandchild, Reign Ferguson.
Cathy grew up in Beckley, West Virginia and graduated from Trap Hill High School, class of 75. She then attended and graduated from Concord College. Cathy taught for two years in West Virginia before relocating to the Fredericksburg area. Cathy then began teaching high school in Stafford, Virginia and was awarded teacher of the year during her 30 year tenure. While Cathy loved teaching and provided endless support for her colleagues she was fortunate enough to retire early and assume the most important role of her life, Nana. Cathy missed teaching and all the wonderful friends and colleagues she made along the way but she lived and breathed for her grandchildren and family.
As per Cathy’s request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. There will be a celebration of life in June held at the White Horse in the Fairview Beach area.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the marching band of Brooke Point High School in Stafford, Virginia.
