William W. Raines, age 90 of Middletown, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Atrium Medical Center. He was born October 4, 1921 in Excello, Ohio the son of Robert H. Raines and Beulah J. Ogden Raines. William attended Monroe High School and graduated in 1939. He played 4 years of basketball and football, and ran track in his senior year. His basketball team was the first team in school history to go to the State Tournament, and made it to the semi-finals before losing. William served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII with the rank of Corporal. He served in Guam and in Iwo Jima and volunteered for an expeditionary force to the Truk Islands. Mr. Raines joined the Oglesby-Barnitz Bank in 1946 as a teller. He attended The American School of Banking and the Central State School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin. He had many friends and acquaintances throughout Southern Ohio. He served two terms as President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Association of Bank Auditors and Controllers NABAC. He took early retirement from Bank One in 1983 after 38 years of service. William was Senior Vice-President at that time. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. During his time he served on the Board of Stewards, Board of Trustees, Audit staff, taught Sunday School to High School students, and served as an usher. Mr. Raines was a member of the Wildwood Golf Club, where he served two terms on the Board and was a Past President of the Board. He served his community as a Volunteer at the Middletown Regional Hospital, served on the Middletown Chamber of Commerce Board, served on the Board of Directors of the Middletown Junior Achievement, and served as President on the Board of Directors of Woodside Cemetery Association. He was a Life Member of the VFW, DAV, Middletown Sportsmen's Club, and PAWS. He is survived by a son, William R. Raines; a daughter, Carol A. Harmon; grandchildren, Amanda husband, Mark Harmon-Kuykendoll, John P. Raines, and Samantha Melchoir; and five great grandchildren, Brooke, Autumn, Mackenzie, Michael, and Danielle. William was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Geraldine Sandidge; two brothers, Robert O. Raines and Henry H. Raines; and his wife of 61 years, Martha E. Doebler Raines on August 14, 2003. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Penrod officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Friday at the funeral home with Masonic Services at 12:30 PM. Burial will be at the Woodside Cemetery with Military Honors.
