She was born on March 4, 1936 and was the youngest of Bradley & Pearl Spencer’s 7 children. She grew up on Big Branch in Breathitt County, KY during the Great Depression. We all knew and loved her as our Aunt Julie.
She wasn’t shy to speak her mind but she also wasn’t shy to love. She loved her family and cared deeply about everyone. She was good natured, spirited and loved to laugh. She was blessed with a sense of humor and could laugh with everyone, as well as be tickled at herself.
She joined the United States Air Force in the 1950’s and while stationed in California she met another Air Force Kentuckian, Robert “Moose” Halcomb, who was destined to be the love of her life.
Uncle Moose said that when Julie (or as he called her “Toots) served him her chicken & dumplings, he knew he was going to marry that pretty blue eyed girl from Breathitt County.
They were married in 1959 and spent 48 years together. They loved one another fiercely and Julie devoted herself to him and he to her. Uncle Moose loved sports and Aunt Julie was right beside him as they watched the Reds, Bengals or each and every golf tournament cable TV had to offer. She said she watched a lot of sports with Moose, but she didn’t understand all the details.
However, there was no place she’d rather be than by his side wherever that happened to be.
When she lost him in April of 2007, it was one of the deepest trials of her life. She grew in her faith, trusted the Lord and persevered.
As a family (which includes numerous brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews) we mourn the loss of this very special loved one and also the loss of our family matriarch.
Finally, she is with her Moose again and when the day comes that the Archangel’s trumpet sounds and all the Saints are called to heaven… we rejoice in the fact we will see and be with our Aunt Julie again.
