March 2025 at Mt. Pleasant Assisted Living, Monroe Ohio.
Jay was born in Canton, Ohio to Jay Walter and Ida Marie (Nunamaker) Doty and graduated
from Ohio University with his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry. While there, he was
a member of various clubs and organizations including the National Society of Scabbard and
Blade, a military honorary organization for ROTC cadets. He graduated in January, 1961 with
his master's of science. Shortly following that, he worked at Mound Research facility in
Miamisburg until his retirement in 1992.
He married Gertrude Jacquelene "Jackie" Weaver on 1 August 1962 at the First Baptist Church
in Franklin, Ohio. After his honorable discharge from the US Army as a First Lieutenant Ordinance
Corps on 9 January 1967, the newlyweds moved to their permanent home on Weidner Road in
Clearcreek Township, Warren County Ohio. After 53 years in this home, the couple moved to
Monroe, Ohio until his death.
He was involved in many service organizations in Clearcreek Township and Springboro Ohio
including the Springboro Ohio, Lions Club and its mentor program, the Springboro Leo Club
which worked with young teens in the area. Jay served as District Governor for District 13-H from
1993 to 1994 and received the Governor's Achievement Award as Outstanding Secretary for the
district from 1995-1996. He was active in the local CB club in the 1970s as well as served on the
citizen watch program offered through the Clearcreek Township Police Department.
Jay enjoyed woodworking, restoring cars and vegetable gardening in his free time. With the help
of his father-in-law and brother-in-law, the three built Jay and Jackie's dream home on Weidner
Road in the 1960s. This began a lifelong love of woodworking and "fixing things". He looked
forward each year to planting a garden and spending time with family at Kings Island and during
South Carolina summer vacations. His love of country prompted him to proudly joined the
National Society of Sons of the American Revolution. That interest in family history continued
throughout his retirement as he loved learning about his ancestors and his family's deep roots in
the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie (Weaver) Doty, of 62 years, a sister, Patricia Chambers, two
daughters, Debbie (Steven) Large and Bobbi (Todd) Ezzo and 4 grandchildren: Ashley Ezzo, Peyton (Erin) Large, Joshua Ezzo and Taryn Large. He was preceded in death by his parents.
