I did not spend much time with Uncle Art over the years but do cherish our occasional phone calls over the holidays and of course his Christmas newsletters were always well received.  I do remember how much joy Art and Eula would bring into my parent's (Harry and Shirley Thayer) lives when the four of them would get together and visit.  My parents would light up when they regaled me with stories after their visits and I could easily see why my mother spoke so highly of her brother Art over the years. 
Although I personally did not spend much time with Uncle Art I do have one very fond memory.  It was simple gesture but one I will associate with Art for the remainder of my time on this earth.  When my father passed Art came to stay with my mother for short time in Florida. I was there at the house as well when Art arrived. I don't know how we got on the subject but Art could not believe I had never tasted a fried peanut butter banana sandwich.  Later that evening without saying a word Art went to the kitchen and made me my first fried peanut butter banana sandwich.  I immediately  took a liking to this simple delicacy.  Now each time I have a fried peanut butter banana sandwich I think of Uncle Art.
I truly believe Art has been reunited with Eula and all the family that has preceded him death and he is happy to be among them again.

Uncle Art and I did not really know each other well but I do have good memories of him and Eula attending my wedding as well as the weddings of my sister Victoria and my brother Michael.  Art was also there in person for my mom when she was sick and died of cancer 36 years ago.  Thanks mostly to my wife Katherine, we traded Christmas newsletters (Art's was hand typed) and shared homemade goodies every Christmas for the past few decades.

Art send us a hand typed message a few weeks ago and he died still independently mobile and with his mind intact.  I am happy for that.

I had the honor and privilege of being a step grandson in law of Arthur and his wife Eula during my marriage to their granddaughter. Arthur was a great man who gave much hospitality, counsel and love to his family. A gentleman of impeccable style and class, a proud veteran and civil servant, a wonderful husband to Eula and a man so humble, he'd be embarrassed by such accolades. When I married into the Stamper/Ulshoefer Family, I was touched that Tony’s Uncle Art and Aunt Eula made the trip to Boston to attend our wedding.  As the child of immigrants, all of my aunts and uncles live(d) in Europe.  I was delighted to meet and form a relationship—-fostered via letters, cards and Christmas packages from Vermont.  I remember that final Christmas when Eula was ill and Art was settling in to care for her with their “pantry full” and a “stack of books” to read.  He was prepared to care for his beloved, without complaint.  Over time,  Art gently communicated that he favored Lake Champlain Dark Chocolate and my homemade caramel corn which Tony and I gladly obliged!  Art made an effort with the children of his deceased siblings…to stay connected.  I will always be grateful.  I will miss his cards and letters.  Rest In Peace, Dear Uncle Art.  I hope you’re listening to your beloved opera in Heaven, with Eula by your side.


I will always be grateful to Uncle Art and Aunt Eula, who were there for my mom (Art's sister, Rose) when she was battling cancer and for me (who was only 19) when she died.  I've posted a picture below of Art, his sister Rose, and brother Chris.

Art certainly seemed to know the recipe for a long, happy, healthy life.  From what I gather from his holiday newsletters , that recipe includes working out three times a week even when you're in your nineties, growing a garden of beautiful flowers to view outside your windows, and taking life as it comes.  
It is sad to see the last of the Ulshoefer siblings pass, but I take comfort in the thought that Art will be reunited with Eula and with his family and friends that have passed before him.   Art was a good man and will be greatly missed.  

Like so many of my Ulshoefer uncles who lived far away, I saw very little of Uncle Art.  I do remember the times he visited our family when I was young.  Uncle Art was a kind and gentle man who took an interest in me.  I felt immediately comfortable around him.  I'm so glad he lived the long life he deserved.  It was great seeing him in again in Dayton after so many years.  I'm glad my son David had a chance to get to know Uncle Art, who was the last surviving Ulshoefer brother.  My sons never met my mom, who died prematurely.  I like to think that by getting to know Uncle Art, David got a glimpse of the grandmother he never knew (and who would have loved him had she lived).  Thanks Uncle Art!
