Nora M. (MacDonnell) Barraford of Sherborn, died Wednesday February 4, in her 102nd year. Born in England, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Eva May (Law) MacDonnell. She was the beloved wife of the late Daniel M. Barraford who died in 2002.
Nora served in the English Air Force (WAAF) during WWII. She was among the first women to attend Rutgers University, earning her BA. She earned her MA in English from Boston University and an MFA and PhD from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst simultaneously. She was an English Professor at Worcester State University. In her small way, she was a pioneer, a working woman in a man's world. Nora was a painter, writer, journalist, poet and woman of seemingly infinite wisdom.
Nora was the devoted mother of Andrew E. Barraford and his wife Carmen S. of Amherst NH, the late Daniel M. Barraford III and his wife Cate Barraford, who survives, of Barnstead NH, and Thomas J. Barraford and his wife Jane R. of Bellingham; loving grandmother of Eulalie Barraford Paris and Krysta Maravilla Barraford both of Goffstown NH, Nicholas A. Barraford of Nashua NH, Andrew B. Barraford of Amherst MA, the late Justin McPherson Barraford, Julia Barraford Temel of Ankara Turkey, Theodore Elliot Barraford of Manchester NH, Ryan M. and James T. Barraford both of Bellingham, and Kristen G. Barraford of Pembroke Pines FL. She is also survived by her brother, Theodore MacDonnell of Columbus GA, and her sister, Peggy Celley of Philadelphia PA.
Nora’s funeral service will be on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 10 o’clock at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 18 Springdale Ave., Dover. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 1-4 PM in the Wadsworth-Chiappini Funeral Home, 318 Union Ave. FRAMINGHAM, relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment Highland Cemetery, Dover.
