Helen was born on July 17, 1923 in New York City and raised in Englewood, NJ. After graduating from Wheaton College in Norton, MA, she trained as a physical therapist and worked in the polio wards in Minneapolis. She then spent many years on Martha's Vineyard raising children and practicing physical therapy independently and at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. She was the first Director of the Council on Aging for Edgartown. In the 1980's, Helen moved to Falmouth, MA, and continued to practice physical therapy. She recently moved to Framingham.
Throughout her life, Helen was an avid gardener, animal lover, 4-H leader, substitute teacher, and volunteer. She was an accomplished seamstress and pianist who enjoyed embroidery and making metal sculptures.
She is survived by her daughter Janet Erickson and her husband Richard Bird of Framingham; son Robert Erickson and his wife Sue of Red Bank, NJ; daughter Beverly Erickson of Milford, NH; grandchildren Alan Erickson of New York City, Alison Bird and her husband Andrey Zholudok of Framingham, Laura Bird of Virginia Beach, and Rachel Carpenter of Manchester, NH; step-grandchildren Jonathan Marcus of Indianapolis and Lisa Marcus of Red Bank, NJ. She is pre-deceased by her sister Bernice Rosenberger of Wernersville, PA.
A private memorial service was held in September of 2015.
In lieu of flowers, Helen had requested donations to the Falmouth Public Library (Trustees, Falmouth Public Library, 300 Main Street, Falmouth, MA 02540).
