Born in Springfield, Ill, she was one of six daughters to James and Lucille Roberts. As a young girl Joyce spoke of singing on the radio with her five sisters, and working at a local car hop.
Joyce married her first husband at the age of 16, Airmen Herb Jones. Together they toured Germany, Greece, and the US where they had four children. Joyce was a homemaker for many years raising her children. She made Colorado Springs her final home in the early 70's.
Joyce started working as a CNA and it became her true calling as she remained as Sunnyrest Nursing Home for 40 years until her retirement. For many years, Joyce also worked at the Medallion and did in home personal care as a second job, to support her four children as a single mom. She loved her patients and became attached to many of them, visiting on her days off and even bringing her children to visit them. In her later years she became a bath aide for all the patients. She would shop for special soaps, shampoos and lotions as well as styling their hair to help them feel special.
In 1984 she met her second husband and love of her life, James Barbour. They were married for 37 years until his passing in 2021. Together they enjoyed road trips, touring the parade of homes, and family get togethers. Grandchildren were the bright light in their lives and they attended nearly every school function and sporting event.
Joyce was a generous person that would help anyone in need. There was a time when a fellow employee had an accident and she rallied her family to get together and help to provide groceries and items of need. She would volunteer to give her PTO days at work to other people that were sick and needed time off. She was a truly selfless person.
Joyce loved her family and spending time together. She loved holidays because it meant time with the family. The past three years since losing her husband, she lived alone and found comfort in her dog Maggie. She spent weekends with her grandchildren, and her biggest joy was her new great-granddaughter, Alex. Joyce agonized being alone and appreciated anyone that called or visited even for a short time.
Special thanks to those who gave of their time to ease her loneliness and bring her joy, Grandchildren Jennifer, Brandon, Ryan, Mikey, Emily, and friends Sabrina and Lexi. To her Son in law Dave, she considered her best friend and partner in crime to the end, Thank you isn't enough.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Jim, parents James and Lucille Roberts, sisters Linda, Donna, Sharon, and great grandson Hunter.
She leaves behind to carry on her love and light, son Herb Jones, daughter Nancy (Kevin) Lewis, son Kevin (Chris)Jones, daughter Julie (Dave) Otto, grandchildren Jennifer, Kevin, Steven, Brandon, and Ryan, 15 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, sisters Marilyn and Patty.
