He courageously served in the United States Army for 30 years. He lead soldiers in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. During his career he rose from the lowest enlisted rank to the highest and retired as a Command Sergeant Major.
Following his military retirement he was a vital member of the iconic Broadmoor World Resort team for 31 years.
He was a devoted and loving father to his three children: Pat Lane (Ray), Susan Reed (Lee) and COL (RET) Ron Ocker (Tracy).
He was a caring and adoring grandfather to his eight grandchildren: Chrissy, Jimmy, Natalie, Brandi, Brandon, Gabrielle, Graham and Griffin. He was also a great grandfather and great-great grandfather.
Most importantly he was an extraordinarily devoted husband to Marga Marie Ocker for almost 72 years. They married at the ages of 21 in Junction City, Kansas on October 31, 1952. This began their lifelong journey together. They were best friends. Marga and Jim endured many hardships and physical separations, but their true love for one another never wavered.
