David age 86, life long resident of Colorado passed away Friday May 29, 2020 surrounded with love by his children.
David was born May 28, 1934 in Denver, CO. Named David Levi Jefferson Davis Baxter, he went by David Levi. Raised in Eads, CO. Graduate of Eads High School, Class of 1953. 1 yr. Basketball, 3 yr. Baseball and Football achievements. Go Eagles!
David is survived by his 3 children, son Gregg (Penny) Baxter, daughters Deborah (Richard "deceased") Harris and Christine (Charles) Moore, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 brothers, twin brother Henry Baxter, James Baxter, Roy Baxter, Dan Baxter and Bill Baxter.
David a proud Veteran, Recruitment at Philadelphia, PA. Dec. 12,1955. 10 weeks after completion David volunteered for CB & Aviation duty preparing to ship out Mar. 02,1956 to USNTC, Great Lakes, Illinois. Dec. 01,1957 David was awarded BT3 Petty Officer 3rd Class Boiler and Turbine Chief less than 2 years into his service. He served 4 years active duty with the US Navy aboard the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier (known as The Fighting "I") While off duty he volunteered to stay aboard to maintain the ship and cook for his fellow ship mates. He was awarded GOOD CONDUCT Medal and transferred to Reserves, Command Ninth Naval District, 4 more years inactive US Navy, and Honorably Discharged Jan. 30, 1963
Before his service he was employed with the Missouri Pacific Railroad-track and Equipment Mechanic. After his service he ventured onto other endeavors; School Bus driver-Widefield Dist. #3, Yellow Cab driver. Entrepreneur Business Owner of a Full Service Gas Station (Co-Owner of Golf Acres Exxon with his Dad, Owner of 19th Street Skelly Gas, and Owner of Skyway Husky Gas), Owner of B&G Body Shop. Auto Mechanic for multiple businesses (Team Chevrolet, Daniel Chevrolet, Bob Fosse Mercury) Shared his knowledge of Entrepreneurship and precipitation hands on of with friend's Garage, as well as working his own home Garage-Mechanic and Auto Paint Technician & Body Shop.
David's experience in the Navy played a very important role in his career as Mechanical Engineer at Widefield School Dist. #3. He frequently pointed out that the Navy taught him the value and knowledge on mechanics. He would often explain to loved ones the importance of the boilers and turbines on the Aircraft Carrier, they kept the ship sailing and speed.
David's career and retired as Mechanical Engineer after 21 1/2 years with Widefield Dist. #3
David devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle enjoyed many years camping, boating and fishing with family and friends. Creating cherished wood carved crafts and beaded crafts for loved ones together with his wife.
David is proceeded in death by his wife Gwendolyn Lauderdale Baxter of 63 years of marriage. David and Gwen met when she was 12 and he was 18. David gave her a dime told her to call him when she turned 18, she waited til she was 16. They were married Sept. 10, 1956 in Carlsbad, NM.
David is also proceeded in death by his father James O. Baxter, mother Mabel M. (Eder) Baxter, sister Florence Baxter and grandson James B. Wheeler."
