After being wounded and receiving honors including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor, Carl chose to serve his country for the rest of his career. While a young man in the Army, he met and married his wife Kathleen. After retiring from active duty in 1987, Carl continued to serve his country by working in Civil Service at Ft. Carson, CO, until he became ill and retired. Carl enjoyed fishing, traveling and had great mechanical aptitude. But most of all he loved being a grandfather to his grandchildren. In recent months, it was visiting with his grandkids that brought him the most joy.
