Woody was born April 22, 1925, to Herschel Goodnight Young and Sarah Clyde Holt-Young in Fort Worth. He grew up in Handley. Before completing high school, he joined the United States Navy where he served in the South Pacific. Upon discharge from the Navy, he married the love of his life, Margaret Webb, to whom he was married for 66 wonderful years. Margaret preceded him in death March 14, 2014.
Woody was an avid golfer. His love for the game started at a very young age as a caddy at Meadowbrook County Club. While he attended Texas Wesleyan College in the early 1950s, his career in golf continued as he became a member of the college golf team.
After college he worked as a firefighter for the Fort Worth Fire Department before he began his long career with Southwestern Bell. He held numerous positions and titles in the Yellow Pages Division. Upon his retirement he was very instrumental with his wife in the founding of Cornerstone Assistance Network and the Christian Woman's Job Corps.
Woody lived his life as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who modestly, quietly and continuously served his fellow man. Anyone who knew him knew how much he loved his family and the game of golf.
He was predeceased by his wife; parents; grandson, Eric J. Young; and five of his six siblings.
Survivors: Sons, Richard E. Young (Linda), Quentin Young (Tammie) and Robert L. Young (Michelle); one grandson; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; brother, Bobby Joe Young of Hurst; and numerous other family and friends who will miss him.
