Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Wanda's name to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) or to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
Wanda was born June 19, 1932, in rural Fannin County, Texas to Lewis Alvin and Georgia Hill Turner. She graduated from Bonham High School and then attended Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth where she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
In Fort Worth she met Ernest Lowrey and they were married on Dec. 21, 1951. Together they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this December.
Wanda first taught in the Everman School District and then in the Fort Worth Independent School District for 34 years, most of those as a kindergarten teacher at David K. Sellars Elementary School. Her greatest joy in life was teaching and caring for children, her own and others.
Wanda and Ernie both were members of Handley Meadowbrook Christian Church (now, The Welcome Table) where she taught Sunday school and served in several positions of leadership including Deacon and Elder. She also volunteered with many organizations in the community including Meals on Wheels, Casa Manana, Bass P. Hall, the Scott Theater, the Nature Center, various public schools and Concerts in the Park.
Friends and family were drawn to Wanda's many stories of growing up on a farm in Carson, Texas, during the Great Depression. She maintained an infectious sense of humor to the very end, and this inspired everyone around her.
