Vernon is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Lloyd, also of Fort Worth; his 5 children from his first marriage: Sumaiya, Curtis, Lisa, Larry and Gary; his 13 grandchildren: Kristi, Scott, Humza, Eric, Nusaybah, Grant, Eric, Osama, Nathan, Fatimah, Amy, Safiyah, and Keila; and 5 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his mother Thelma Eaton and Step-father Chester Eaton, of Buffalo, Wyoming.
Vernon was born on December 2, 1931 in Buffalo, Wyoming, to parents Ora F. Lloyd “Doc” and Thelma May Haight. He graduated from Buffalo High School in Buffalo, Wyoming, and soon thereafter joined the Navy to fight in the Korean Conflict. Here he met his first wife via a written correspondence from civilian to servicemen (which was a thing of the time) Imogene Whitfield of Fort Worth, Texas. They met in person in San Francisco and married in Buffalo, Wyoming. They had five children and 15 years together.
Vernon met his current wife, Mary; when he asked her to dance during a Christmas party Dec of 1976. They immediately had a connection and became regular dance partners. They married on Oct. 20, 1977 and continued the tradition of dancing through the years, going every Friday night to dance and winning several dance contests. They were life partners and best friends and their deep connection never faded but instead grew as the years continued for almost 46 years.
Vernon was a very social, active man, who loved to live life to it's fullest. The Navy set the seed for travel, and before it was all done, he had seen a large portion of the world. His family and friends will always remember him as the life of the party, a great friend, and a good person. Ahead of his time in the respect of others, regardless of who they were.
A memorial is scheduled for Monday July 31, 2023, at Shannon Funeral Home, 6001 Rufe Snow, Fort Worth, Tx. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Vernon’s life.
The family would like to thank all of those that supported us during the last four months. And a special thanks to Rene Smith – Health Care Giver who made his last days comfortable and more enjoyable.
