2022, at the age of eighty-seven.
Vera was born Vera Mae Thorman on November 16, 1934, in Roscoe, TX, to
Faye and Earverette Thorman. In second grade, she and her family moved to
Sweetwater, TX. Vera graduated from Newman High school, where she
participated in band and cheerleading. There, she met her husband, Billie Bob.
They married on August 22, 1953, after which they moved to Lubbock, TX where
they lived until Billie Bob graduated from Texas Tech University. After graduation,
they lived in Abilene, TX, and Belton, TX, before settling down in Fort Worth, TX.
Vera and Billie Bob enjoyed the horse races, riding motorcycles, and
traveling. While Billie Bob was with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, they lived in
Germany, from 1980-1982 and were able to host lots of family and friends, taking
frequent trips around Germany and surrounding countries. They were married for
forty years and raised two sons.
Vera was an avid reader and enjoyed needlework, exercising, and watching
movies. She was a loyal Texas Tech Football and Dallas Cowboys fan, never missing
a game on television no matter how many times her teams would let her down. Above all, she loved her family. She eagerly awaited phone calls from her sons as they drove home from work in the
afternoons, her nightly calls from her sister Grace, and any news from her
granddaughters. She was especially interested in the exciting updates they had to
share, and was extremely proud of their accomplishments as adults. They were all
so very dear to her.
Vera is preceded in death by her infant son, David Lee, and her husband,
Billie Bob. She is survived by her sister, Gracie King, of Odessa, TX; son Robert
Mitchel Steele and daughter-in-law Vivian, of Fort Worth, TX; son Gary Dean
Steele and daughter-in-law Glenna Steele of Arlington, TX; granddaughters, Emily
Steele, Kacy Ford, and Taylor Koprivnik; and great-grandchildren, Carter
Mitchel-Steele Rivera and Finley Olivia-Grace Rivera.
