Rosie Lee Powell was born on July 29, 1917 to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Powell in the city of Calvert, Tx. Rosie was the last sibling and she often reminisced on how her father (Papa Charlie) provided for their family after her mother died at an early age. Papa Charlie provided well for his children and our family has witnessed her making "family" a priority.
She spent her childhood in Calvert, Texas (the family still gathers annually on Labor Day). In Calvert, Rosie Lee met and married her sweetheart-Mr. Andrew D. Jones. The two were delivered by the same midwife on the same day. They lived near each other, played with each other and later married after being caught courting on the steps of the church house. The two enjoyed life together and later moved to Houston, Texas where Rosie Lee worked for the Ship Channel while her husband served in the United States Navy during World War II. This union was blessed with four children (Sylvia, Sylvania, Lola, and Joe). After being honorably discharged from the military, the couple moved to Fort Worth. She often gets tickled mentioning her husband surprising her with a home after leaving their apartment on Truman Drive. She has lived in the Stop Six (Carver Heights)area for over 70 years. She has worked in several restaurants throughout the Fort Worth area. Her favorite past time has been enjoying family and friends and engaging in activities with her son, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She joined Paradise Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Singleton. She loved the services at Paradise and her big sister (Sallie Lee) had a lot to do with that. The two would gather there and enjoy their sisterhood and fellowship. She attended Heavenly Gospel and later joined the New Life Christian Fellowship under the leadership of Supt. Johnny Taylor. The program cover depicts a "Living Legend." In February, New Life honored her life; our family enjoyed celebrating our dear mother/grandmother and grateful for the church acknowledging her as a legend.
GOD has blessed Mama in countless ways; Her 106 years were good years. He allowed this family to watch over her and provide for her while she was still watching over us and providing for some of us. Her daily words would be, " Are you alright?" Then once nodding our heads, she would reply, "If you are good, then I am good." Mama, Some may say that you stayed here a long time, but I believe you stayed here long enough for your family to say, "We are alright Mama, WE miss you already, We loved you so.
