Peggy was born February 5, 1933, in Decatur, TX. She was the youngest of Tommie and Edward Griffeth and survived six sisters and three brothers. She grew up on a farm in Wise County in the small community of Fairview, currently New Fairview, near Rhome, Texas. She graduated as the first valedictorian of the newly created Northwest High School in 1950.
She married her high school sweetheart Mike Mayfield in 1951 and moved to Fort Worth. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University in 1955. She later completed a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1962, followed by her Nurse Practitioners Certificate from UCLA in 1977. She taught nursing at TCU for 32 years and retired in May 1990 as an Associate Professor Emeritus. She was honored in 1975 as an Outstanding Educator of America. She was a member of the American Nursing Association and Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing.
While at TCU, Peggy authored the textbook, Health Assessment: A Modular Approach, which was used in nursing and medical schools curricula. She was also called upon to be an expert witness on nursing procedures in Tarrant County court trials.
She served on the City Council’s Emergency Medical Service Committee of Fort Worth and was instrumental in upgrading the emergency care in Fort Worth to Mobile Intensive Care Units.
She has been an active member of Travis Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years.
Her hobbies included quilting and computerized sewing. In addition to the family quilts, she has made hundreds of baby quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. The Star Telegram recognized her in 2000 as a runner-up for the Volunteer of the Year Award for her work donating quilts to JPS Hospital. She is a Past President and lifetime member of the Trinity Valley Quilters Guild. Her quilts have been displayed as far away as The University of Delaware Museum.
Mrs. Mayfield passed away last Saturday at the age of 89.
Survivors: Daughter, J’Nevelyn Faubion and husband, Alfred, from Corinth; daughter, Dana Cheneler and husband, John, from Colleyville; granddaughters, Diana White, Valerie Faubion, Brandi Trujillo, Michelle Peterson, Rebecca Corry; grandsons, Daniel Faubion, Mark Cheneler, Michael Mayfield, Kyle Mayfield; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Griffeth from Denton; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike and son, Gregory.
