Born on April 20, 1948, in Austin, Travis County, Texas to John Gerald Roaten and Virginia Lois Younglove Roaten, Norman was raised with strong family values that he carried throughout his life.
Norman was a proud graduate of Poly Tech High School in Fort Worth, graduating in 1966. Following graduation, he honorably served his country in the United States Navy (1970 - 1973 USS Isabell & USS Lang). Upon returning home, Norman pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Early in his career, Norman worked as a Registered Nurse at the John Peter Smith Hospital Orthopedic unit for a brief time. He later transitioned to work as a switchman for the Santa Fe Railroad, later the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, where he served for 41 years.
Norman was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Carroll Gaines Roaten (2010); his father, John Gerald Roaten (2008); his mother, Virginia Lois Younglove Roaten (2021).
He is survived by his wife Jo White, her children Terri White, Ann Watson, and Tony White, and her grandchildren Colin Watson, Grace Watson, Cabot White, Tess Spurrell and preceded in death by her grandson Noble White; his son David Roaten and wife Tiffany; his daughter Daina Ortega and husband David; his grandsons Peter Kuhlmann and Wesley Kuhlmann and his wife Rose; his brother Jimmy Roaten; and his sister Laurie Childers and husband Wayne.
A man of diverse talents and experiences, Norman led a life defined by service – to his country, to his friends, and family. Norman was a caretaker to many, demonstrating the love of Christ through his actions and selfless dedication to others. His home and heart were always open to those in need. His legacy of hard work, dedication, faith, and compassionate care will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in Norman's honor to the North Texas Humane Society or to cancer research.
