Norma was born on October 19th, 1936, in Cisco TX, the third child of Rudolph and Lola Schaefer. Norma loved growing up in Cisco and helping with the daily activities on her family’s farm. She graduated from Cisco High School, where she was a talented and accomplished singer, earning All State honors in choir.
After high school, Norma attended Cisco Junior college, where she was active in many student activities, including cheerleading. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from McMurry University, and spent a long and rewarding career as a schoolteacher.
While at McMurry, she met the love of her life, John Harris, and the two were married on June 25, 1960, in Cisco. In 1962, John and Norma relocated to Stinnett, Texas, when John accepted a position as Vice President at First National Bank. Upon moving, Norma continued her career as an English teacher at Stinnett High School, where she taught for many years before finishing her career at Bowie Middle School in Amarillo.
John and Norma raised their three children – Tim, Ted, and Holly – in Stinnett, and although they moved away after the kids graduated from high school, they always considered it their home, and it will be the final resting place for them both.
Norma was raised in the Methodist church, and she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Stinnett, where she played piano and sang in the choir. Norma and John would often sing duets during church services, and their kids remember fondly how beautiful their voices sounded together. Norma remained active in the Church everywhere she lived, most recently at St. Paul United Methodist in Hurst, where she sang in the choir and served as a member of United Methodist Women, the Worship Committee, and the Mary Martha Sunday School Class.
Norma was above all else a devoted wife and mother. She and John were madly in love. Each day when they left for work, they embraced and parted with a kiss as heartfelt as the one before. Never have two people been more devoted to each other and their children. They provided selflessly and loved their kids beyond anything that can be described in words. Norma was a sweet, kind soul with a warm smile and a hug that made everything better. Rest in Peace, Mom. You were our guiding light.
Norma was preceded in death by her loving husband, John, parents Rudolph and Lola Schaefer, brothers Gene Schaefer and Joe Schaefer, and niece Sherry Schaefer.
She is survived by sons Tim and Ted Harris, daughter Holly Malloy, sister Gloria Moser, grandchildren Nikolas and Scout Harris, 6 nephews and 3 nieces.
The memorial service is scheduled for Monday, August 29th, 2:00pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 852 West Bedford Euless Road, Hurst TX 76053. Visitation will directly follow the service.
Graveside services will be held in Stinnett, Texas on Saturday, October 15th, followed by a reception at the Stinnett United Methodist Church. Details to follow.
