Margaret Reed passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at the age of 89.
SERVICE: A private graveside service will be held for family at 12 pm on Thursday, March 26 at Cedar Hill Memorial Park. In light of COVID-19, a celebration of life will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Church at a later date.
VIEWING: Margaret will lie in state from 1 pm to 7 pm, Wednesday, March 25 at Gregory W. Spencer Funeral Directors.
Margaret Irene Wells was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on June 3, 1930, to Ida Mae Saunders and Oscar Wells. The eldest of seven children, she was educated at the historic I.M. Terrell High School where she ran track and proudly served as a majorette.
In 1958, Margaret and Marvin Thomas Reed united in Holy Matrimony. They built a home and life filled with love in Fort Worth’s Historic Morningside District, where they enjoyed over fifty years of marriage until Marvin’s passing in 2012.
She was employed at Jas K. Wilson Co., working as a buyer and manager over her thirty-plus year career, winning many top sales awards before retiring in 1988. A devoted member of Mount Zion Baptist Church on the Historic Southside, Margaret served as a deaconess and Sunday School Teacher, and was recently celebrated as a 2020 Hall of Fame Honoree during the church’s 125th Anniversary. She was an avid reader and traveler, known for her organizational skills, servant leadership and style.
On Tuesday, March, 17, 2020, Margaret transitioned from earth to glory in the comfort of the home she built with her late husband. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughters Sharon McKinney and Lonnetta Garrett, and her loving husband. She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Lacy, Charletta Miller, Cynthia McKinney-Smith (Greg), Sandra Sibley and Johnica Reed Rivers; grandchildren, Roy Lee Garrett Jr., Maria Garrett, Eric Garrett, Lucretia White, Shanya Holloway, Shanette Lacy, Christy Spencer, Swarn Lacy IV, Sherine N. Tatum, Sarah Sibley and Araya Smith; sister, Mary Ann Ireland; 21 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, extended family and friends.
