Larry Craig McCarter

Larry Craig McCarter of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on June 5, 2021. He was born on January 7, 1951 in Fort Worth, Texas to the late James Monroe McCarter and Betty Campbell McCarter.

He grew up in Fort Worth, attending Handley Junior High and graduating from Eastern Hills High School in 1969, where he was Senior Class President and Captain of the football team. He attended McMurray College on a football scholarship and completed his degree at Texas Tech University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Larry met his wife, Kristy, on a blind date to the Texas State Fair and they were married 45 years. He coached football and baseball in the Arlington School System for five years while earning a business degree at Texas Wesleyan. The next step in his career required a move to Midland, Texas to begin working for Getty Oil as a landman and attaining a Master’s degree from UTPB. After a Getty/Texaco merger, the family moved to Denver, Colorado where they lived for the next 18 years and raised their 3 children. In 2001, they moved to North Carolina where Larry was a marketing manager with Shell Oil Co. He cherished the many friends he made in the oil business, but his first love was his family and coaching his children in their many sports activities. He spent countless hours in the back yard and on the sports fields patiently teaching and cheering on his kids and their teammates. Larry and Kristy traveled frequently, including several international trips. It was a family joke that no matter where Larry went, whether it was Germany or Japan, he always ran into a Texas Tech Red Raider.

He is survived by his wife, Kristy Martin McCarter; his brother, Charles “Chuck” McCarter; and his three children: Taylor McCarter Johnson (husband, Chris) of Dallas, Texas; Matt McCarter (wife, Yadi) of Austin, Texas; and Craig McCarter (wife, Meredith) of Charlotte, North Carolina. He was known as “Pops” by his grandchildren, Piper Johnson, Campbell Johnson, Brady Johnson, Josephine McCarter, Elizabeth McCarter, Lucas McCarter, Sebashtian Bluhm, and Camila Rocha.

A service to celebrate Larry’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 11th at City on A Hill Church located at 1140 Morrison Dr., Fort Worth, TX 76120. A reception will be held in the Church fellowship hall following the service. A live stream of the service will be available through the Church’s website – www.cityonahilldfw.com.
