Lac Thi Dang was born on October 06, 1921 in Lang Son, Vietnam. She grew up in Ha Noi during the French Indochina colonial period and through World War II. Following her passion for writing and poetry, she became one of the first women to publish poems in the first Vietnamese women’s magazine of the time. She married her husband, Phai Nghiem, in 1943. When Vietnam separated into two regimes in 1954, she and her husband migrated south to Saigon where she raised 8 children and worked as a poet, writer, columnist, editor, publisher, hospital food supplier, and community educator.
Lac managed to raise her family throughout the turmoil of the Vietnam War. When the war ended, she made the difficult decision to send her children and grandchildren across the sea to escape the damaged country for a better future and set the foundation for them to build successful lives in new lands.
Throughout the hardships that she endured and the sacrifices that she made for her family, her artistic and poetic spirit flourished. She went on to publish several poetry books, supported various social and literary activities, and was an active member of her community. She lived her final years peacefully with her children in the United States and found joy in books, art, flowers, and caring for her grandchildren.
Lac was ordained and assumed the Buddhist name of Dieu Loi.
Lac is survived by her 5 daughters: Mai Phương, Kim Phượng, Quy Phi, Thieu Mai, and Hang Phân; 2 sons: Phat and Phan; 15 grand-children and 13 great grand-children. She is preceded in death by her husband, Phai Nghiem and by her oldest son Phuoc Nghiem.
