Wray was born on April 1, 1932, in Bowie, Texas, to the late Fred Thompson & Estella (Towery) Thompson. He attended Gladewater High School and the University of Texas in Austin. After school he joined the Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the China Service Medal.
Wray started at Tandy Leather in 1958 and managed stores in Grand Rapids, Toronto, Los Angeles, and San Antonio. He resigned as President of Tandy Leather in 1978 and opened The Leather Factory in 1980. In the year 2000 he oversaw the purchase of Tandy Leather and the merging of the two companies as Tandy Leather Factory. Wray retired as CEO in 2006.
Wray liked to fish, hunt, golf, swim, and travel. He also spent many good years at his ‘farm’ in Whitney, TX. His greatest joys came from being able to share these experiences with his family.
Wray was predeceased by his parents, 7 sisters and 2 brothers; He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sally Ann (Viar) Thompson; Children: Jon Thompson (Stephanie); Doug Thompson (Annette); Grandchildren: Michael, Katherine, Samantha, Brian, Claire; Meagan & Lauren; Great Grandson: Nathan.
Memorial donations may be given to: Turner Syndrome Society of the United States or The Wray & Sally Thompson Golf Scholarship at Texas Christian University.
