John was born in Frederick, Md., on June 28, 1943. He graduated from Frederick High School. He married Virginia Maenner on April 13, 1990. John built a career in construction as a general contractor. He had a passion for traveling, fishing and gambling.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Hillery; mother, Lela Ellen Hillery; and granddaughter, Peyton Elizabeth Maenner.
Survivors: Wife, Virginia; children, Coralee Ellen, John Jr., Jerry Dale and Heather Lee; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Howard Kenneth Hillery; and sister, Barbara Shaffer and husband, Julian "Skip" Shaffer.
