John L. was born on August 23, 1952, to James William and Florena Compton in Hooks Bowie, Texas. The 17th sibling of 19 born to this union. Long with family and friends, John L. grew up and attended Hooks High School before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on December 8, 1969.
Upon graduation from Marine Corps boot camp in 1970, John L. attended Military Occupation Skill (MOS) school. After graduation from MOS school, John L. was assigned as an 0842 Field Radio Operator stationed with Casual Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendelton, California. Shortly after joining his unit, they were ordered into service to the Republic of Vietnam. Upon completing his service, John L. returned to Hooks Bowie, Texas. He then moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he met and fell in love with Willie Jewel. From that union, their daughter, Tammie Compton was born. John L. divorced and married his faithful partner in life Pam Compton. He began work for the City of Fort Worth, Texas, and remained employed before submitting to his illness.
John L. is preceded in death by James William Compton (father), Florina Compton (mother), daughter, Tammie Compton, Curtis Lee, Monroe Sr., James William Jr., Clarence Berna, Roy Chester, Willie Charles (brothers), and Vergina Faye (sister). He leaves to cherish his memory; brothers, Willie Lee and Willie Edward (Natalie); sisters, Bobby Jean Compton, Marie Haywood (Glenn) and Katherine Hubbard (Carlton) ; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
