Glenda Joy Thompson

Mrs. Glenda Joy Thompson, born January 31, 1941, in Commerce, Texas to the proud parents of Mr. Benjamin Herring and the late Ms. Dorthiel Ladd-Smith. Glenda transitioned to her Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020, in Fort Worth, Texas. Glenda and her late husband, Amos Russell Thompson were respected hard working members of their Fort Worth community. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University in 1972, her Master of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, and then started her doctorate work across the street at North Texas State University. Glenda developed a passion for Community Health nursing and was highly skilled in her profession. She became the first African American to become the Director of Nursing at the Tarrant County Health Department and remained in that position until retirement. She was instrumental in the planning and building the new Tarrant County Health Department Building before her retirement. Upon retirement from Tarrant County she came back to her local community as a school nurse for two Lake Como Elementary Schools, again giving to the community she so loved. She remained very active in community health care issues and became a member of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated in 1999, this nursing sorority provided her a continued platform to volunteer. Additionally, she was a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association and a care giver to her mother that suffered with dementia. She enjoyed studying her Bible and completed all of the Bible Study Fellowship Courses. Glenda is survived by her two sons, Brandon (Stephanie) Thompson and Gary Stiggers; brother William T. Smith, Jr., six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous other family and friends.

A public celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date!
