Gene picked up groceries, medicine, and sales adds for the elderly shut ins. He bought groceries, toys, candy, and coupons for free Wendy’s Frosties for The Women’s Haven at Christmas. He made many phone calls day or night to check on his family and friends. He also made monetary donations to the church and designated the money for special projects.
Since he was a bachelor, he enjoyed ballroom dancing and beautiful music of the era. He enjoyed music from the big bands of Glen Miller to the vocalist Johnny Mathis. Gene had a deep bond with his family where he was preoccupied with making sure they were cared for. Uncle Gene was always a hit with the children, which brought out the child in him. He was concerned for the youth and contributed to the youth ministry of Calvary Baptist Church in his final tribute of a basketball court with lighting.
