Gary was born January 15, 1946 to Arlie and Gloria Freer in Sugarland, Texas.
Survivors include his sister, Linda Freer Davis of Burleson; nephew, Greg L. Foster and wife, Cari Kepple Foster; 3 grand nieces, Lauren, Cambrie, and Savannah Foster of Burleson; stepdaughter, Heather Whitney Williams of Lafayette, Co; many cousins; and we must not forget his lovable fur babies, Alyx and Buddy.
Gary grew up in Ft Worth, TX. and graduated from Paschal High School in 1964. Following high school, Gary received a football scholarship to Texas A&M University at College Station. He later transferred to UT Arlington where he received his bachelor's degree. Gary worked part time at his father’s company, Freer Mechanical Contractors Inc. in Ft Worth, while attending college and became full time after graduation, eventually becoming the owner of the company. He was very involved in Local 146 serving on several joint committees including labor negotiations, joint apprenticeship, and the pension committee. Gary was also involved in the management side as a member of the Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA) of America and serving as past president in MCA of Texas and MCA of Fort Worth.
In his younger years, he fell in love with his grandparents' ranch in the hill country spending many summers helping his grandfather and exploring the country life. His sister and cousins all agree that Gary was the adventurous leader. He built a cabin on his piece of the property and it is enjoyed by many today. Family and friends were most important to him demonstrated by the close relationships he maintained throughout his life.
His love of water was certainly obvious. Gary moved from the city to a lake house and also acquired a house at the Texas coast. He became a member of the Ft Worth Power Squadron and served his term as President.
Knowing Gary is knowing that he loved to cook. Although he did not have the “professional chef” title, he was of that quality. He attended several schools of cooking in Dallas. Whether canoeing, enjoying adventures in the country, offshore fishing, navigating the Caribbean Islands with a small group, snow skiing, camping in the wilderness, or just having a good time at the ranch, top quality meals were always included.
Gary was a member of the First Methodist Church of Azle. His favorite verse was Jeremiah 29:11. He is now with our Lord and Savior celebrating with his parents and grandparents.
