Doc was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Fort Worth, the eldest of five children, and graduated from Polytechnic High in 1942. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 5th Army in North Africa and Sicily. He earned a veterinary degree from Texas A&M in 1950, and was a member of the Ross Cadet Corps. Upon graduation, he took a temporary position as circus veterinarian for Carson & Barnes' winter quarters in Hugo, Okla., launching a successful solo practice that spanned 50 years in two locations, Forest Hill and Seminary Drive.
Dr. Keen was an active member of the Masons. He served as veterinarian for the Fort Worth Zoo in 1961; taught night classes at TCU for five years; and was an early contributor to the TCU ranch management program, founded in 1956. A passionate world traveler, he visited five continents over 50 years, studying farming/ranching practices and world cultures. Doc was an avid stunt pilot, active for over 20 years in the local aerobatic community.
In 1989 and 1992, Doc walked the back roads of Central Texas with friend and journalist Jon McConal on the Texas Trek and Texas Trek II, logging over 300 miles each trip. Walking, hiking, Mexican food and chili cook-offs were lifelong pleasures.
Survivors: Dr. Keen is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Wynema Keen; daughter, Marta Keen Thompson; and sisters, Jeanette Simcox and Jackie Keen.
